The Psychology of Hoarding

Course Summary
Hoarding Disorder is a complex mental health condition, the field of psychology allows us to explore the inner workings of the human brain to understand further where the behaviour develops and why it happens.
The need to hold onto items is often a coping mechanism in response to experiencing a traumatic or life changing event, or from the influence of other co-morbid mental health or neurodiverse conditions that are also present. This course breaks down the psychological mechanisms underpinning these responses, allowing learners to better understand how person focused strategies and effective approaches to treatment.
This course has been developed around the trainer’s on going Psychological PhD research, which is focused on developing better treatment pathways for hoarding behaviour. This is being carried out by working with clients involved in our Chaos to Order Project and combining their insights with the academic study and principles of Psychology more broadly.
Developed using our own evidence-based, person-centred methods, each course offers practical strategies that are easy to implement into everyday practice.

What will you learn?
Those on the course will learn about the impact of the historic association of hoarding disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder on psychological research, and in turn, our understanding of hoarding. It will then go on to consider how assessments can be used in cases of hoarding, how to understand different aspects of hoarding behaviour and how to apply this to one's practice when faced with hoarding behaviour.
Topics include -
- The impact of stigma on individuals who hoard
- The relationship between hoarding and mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety
- The role of neurodiversity, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and ADHD
Throughout the course there is an emphasis on application of the psychological principles discussed, with delegates having the opportunity to apply their knowledge, discuss ideas and ask questions.
Everyone who hoards has a unique story and this course will empower delegates to support individuals who hoard through an empathetic stance which is based on understanding the person, which research has shown to be the most important aspect of support when it comes to mental health.
