Support Groups

Finding Strength in the Hoarding Community

Support groups offer more than just conversation; they are a lifeline for individuals navigating the life with hoarding. They are a judgment-free environment where people can connect, build trust, and work towards positive change at their own pace.

Benefits of Joining a Hoarding Support Group:

  • Emotional Validation and Understanding: Members share their experiences without fear of judgment, knowing others in the group have faced similar struggles. This shared understanding helps reduce feelings of shame and isolation.

  • A Safe Space to Talk: Talking openly about hoarding behaviours can be incredibly therapeutic. Support groups provide a confidential environment to express feelings, fears, and hopes without pressure.

  • Shared Knowledge and Coping Strategies: Group members and the mentor often share practical tips and techniques for processing items, managing anxiety, and building healthier habits, helping individuals discover what works best for them.

  • Motivation and Encouragement: Seeing others make progress, no matter how small, can inspire hope and determination. Group members cheer each other on, celebrate victories, and provide comfort during setbacks.

  • Reducing Isolation and Building Community: Hoarding can create physical and emotional barriers that isolate individuals from friends, family, and society. Support groups foster a sense of belonging and remind people they are not alone on their journey.

Types of Hoarding Support Groups:

  • Peer-Led Groups: Run by individuals with lived experience of hoarding, these groups offer a grassroots, empathetic approach.

  • Facilitated Groups: Led by mental health professionals or trained facilitators, these groups blend peer support with expert guidance.

  • Online Communities: Virtual groups offer accessible, flexible support for those who may find in-person attendance difficult.

Success Stories From Our Support Group

Joining a support group can feel daunting at first, but it's a courageous step toward healing. Whether in-person or online, these groups offer hope, compassion, and the powerful reminder that change is possible - and no one has to face hoarding disorder alone.

Members of our WhatsApp, virtual and in person support groups share the positive impact it can have:

  • I daren’t think where I would be without Heather, Cloudsend and the support of the group to help me get my home back from the mounds of stuff burying it. I am still a hoarder but also a work in progress! I can smile as I sit in my ‘happy chair’ knowing I haven’t tripped over a single thing for over 12 months now! 😃👍🏼🤗

  • I feel blessed to have been introduced to the group lead by Heather. Its a shame all those years ago had not had this incredible group of people to share and unburden the situation

  • Since joining I have been encouraged by the testimony of others further on in their dehoarding journey who have overcome many obstacles (literally)! on their journey and have got their lives back on track and regained their confidence and self esteem. Both online and face to face meetings are a source of encouragement and group members have been more than willing to listen to me and share helpful ideas and tips and offer support to in a non judgmental way in a safe place. This has helped and encouraged me when I feel the despair, frustration and overwhelm that affects those in a hoarding situation.'
