More cases of cats being hoarded has reportedly been increasing in Singapore in recent years, the Cat Welfare Society said recently.

In 2009, the CWS said it handled about five cases on average a year. The number of cases, however, has climbed to about seven to 10 annually, due to an increase in awareness from members of the public.

In February this year, 39 cats were rescued from a home in Yishun after the authorities found the animals housed in cages, many of which were caked with faeces. The CWS said in an update that nine of the cats have since died. Of the remaining 30, only two have successfully been rehomed, it added.

The CWS also revealed that some cat hoarding cases have been going on for years. In less serious cases, families house a large number of cats, but the animals are mostly well taken care of.

“They have an unusual number of cats, but are still managing,” Ms Veron Lau, a committee member of CWS said. “In these cases, we extend our assistance to sterilise the cats and control the population.”

As for severe cases, Ms Lau said help is often refused and families involved typically live under extreme conditions. “We will help in sterilisation, donating pet supplies, rehoming to a manageable number and even cleaning of the home,” she added. The toughest cases to crack, according to her, are when hoarders are uncooperative.
